Hundun浑沌 Management: Replacing Management with Service **Xuefeng** **November 4, 2010** The connotation of Hundun Management is extremely rich. Put simply, Hundun Management means managing nothing and allowing everything to proceed naturally. Put more profoundly, Hundun Management is the highest form of management: it enables everything to proceed in good order, smoothly and methodically. Hundun Management replaces management with service. The master is the servant; management is service. One must not use administrative orders to coerce others, nor use threats, inducements, intimidation, or suppression to force them into compliance. One must not impose one’s own will upon others in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable or unhappy, nor make people feel that there is any inequality between one person and another. God’s management of the entire universe is Hundun Management: > “All things arise, yet He does not initiate them; > He gives birth to them and nourishes them; > He gives birth but does not possess; > He acts but does not rely on His achievements; > He leads but does not dominate; > When the work is accomplished, He does not claim the credit.” > “He benefits all things and does not contend, > dwelling in places that people dislike.” > “When the work is accomplished and things are completed, > the people all say, ‘We did it naturally.’” > “The best walking leaves no tracks; > the best speech leaves no flaw; > the best counting needs no counting rods; > the best closing has no bolt, yet cannot be opened; > the best binding uses no rope, yet cannot be untied.” > “The highest ruler is one whose existence the people scarcely know; > next is one whom they love and praise; > next is one whom they fear; > and next is one whom they despise.” Hundun Management uses affinity, not intimidation. It is laughing, playing, and enjoying games, not putting on a solemn face and acting self-righteous. It is natural and spontaneous, not forcing others against their will. It gives people joy and freedom, not discomfort and bondage. It is like a gentle drizzle that moistens silently, not a violent storm. It is “teaching without words,” awakening spiritual wisdom and awareness, enabling people to fully manifest the qualities of truth, kindness, beauty, love, faith, honesty, peace, and harmony. It is not endless preaching with eloquent words, nor deception, nor “arousing desire” in order to stir up people’s selfishness and greed and drive them to struggle desperately. Hundun Management is difficult to explain fully and clearly in words. It can only be understood inwardly and is hard to transmit verbally. But one thing is certain: it is service. It uses love to awaken initiative, uses true feelings to touch the heart, and uses sincere service to inspire people to move toward perfection. Everything appears so natural, without any trace of coercion.
