Ever since before the peonies even poked through the soil, I have been keeping a close eye on them. Once they sprouted, I kept count of how many stems came up. Looking at the buds they formed, I couldn't help but marvel at how sturdy and robust these peonies are growing. I also noticed ants crawling all over the flower buds every day. After asking an AI, I learned that the buds secrete a sweet nectar that the ants love, and in return, the ants protect them. I even took a lick myself, but it didn't taste sweet to me at all! Recently, the Chinese roses have also bloomed. Because of the heavy rains earlier, they had caught gray mold. Thanks to Jiao'e's care and treatment, some of them still managed to bloom. Over the past couple of days, Jiao'e has sent me so many photos that the pictures on my computer seem like they can't wait to pop out and say hello to everyone!
The picture above shows a lilac tree, covered in blossoms, both beautiful and fragrant. When I go to clean the tables and chairs near the lilac trees, I like to inhale the fragrance deeply; it's intoxicating!
I only realized it was the Dragon Boat Festival the day before, so I made the vegetable dumplings that northerners eat for the festival. Everyone ate several.
This was the first time I'd ever seen such a big avocado. It was in the supermarket's discount section, and I mistook it for a papaya, so I grabbed one on a whim. One day, I thought, "This papaya is so green; if I can't eat it, I can use it in a dish." Only when I opened it did I realize it was an avocado. Jiao'e said she'd seen similar ones in Africa before.
The photos below were taken last week during our break at Green Lake. The lake water is green, which seems to be where its name comes from. The lakeside was deserted; we didn't see many people. Here, you have to go to the supermarket to see anyone. There are several campsites and picnic areas along the lake. We saw people parking their cars at the campsites and sitting by the lake reading or just daydreaming. The people here really love nature. I forgot to take a picture of the campsite to show you. Mainly, I love plants so much; I use a flower identification app to photograph flowers and grasses wherever I go. I saw gooseberries and bearberries for the first time. The pictures are below; try to guess which ones they are.
